#1 I edited some images in Capture NX2 and converted them to TIFF files, because, as a previous post of mine ( explained, I was not satisfied with the conversion to JPEG when a small file size is needed.I then used Graphic Converter to convert the TIFFs to JPEG and was satisfied with the results as GC allows you to omit the EXIF etc. and thus get down to a small file size with decent image quality. However, it created 2 JPEGS for each TIFF, one quite a bit smaller than the other. If I view each TIFF file with Preview (on a Mac), it also shows two images for each file - I guess one is an embedded thumbnail in the TIFF file.Is there a way to convert to TIFF within NX2 without including the thumbnail? Thanks.Barry Last edited by a moderator: Mar 15, 2017 #2 No, I don't think so. But Nikon ViewNX2 does not insert the thumbnail. The thumbnail is tiny and could be useful, I don't see why it is a problem. However I have a solution which means you won't need to use GC to make your smaller JPGs. Use Nikon View NX2 after using Capture NX2 (if you need more advanced editing - you might find View NX2 does all you need). If you really want to not have the thumbnail, simply edit all your photos in Capture NX2, then run View NX2 and use the Convert option to export them all as TIFFs, and it will do exactly what you want, no thumbnail.View NX2 Convert Files also allows you to export as JPG in any size you want, so you can do it all in one step. You choose the number of pixels to make it smaller, the quality, and many other options. #3 If you "Open Nikon software, Capture NX-D, View NX-i, View NX2, Capture NX2 Item Size View NX-i; View NX2; Nikon will no longer update the software and will no longer offer No such thing as an "incompatible" version of PS for receiving TIFF files from NX2. Edit>Preferences>General and point it at the EXE for the version of PS that you have. You are thinking that because ACR does not support your camera you can't send a TIFF there? Not so.DG You're right, of course. What I meant is that my version of PS, version 7, does not run on Mac OS 10.5 so I have to boot up a 10.4 system to run PS so it's a PITA which would not be a practical solution.I know that the current version of GIMP also sees two entities, which it calls Pages, and gives an error message when opening a Capture NX2-produced TIFF, although it will eventually read it in after dismissing the error window and selecting Page 1.Also, the MAC Preview program sees two images, but iPhoto just one.Barry #10 So did you try View NX2 like I suggested? It is a free download and does everything you want in one step. Yes. To quote from the ViewNX 2 help file:"You cannot convert the following RAW images: o RAW images saved with the Capture NX software series...."View NX 2 will convert a TIFF image saved by Capture NX2, and it only produces one JPEG file, which is good to know, although Graphic Converter offers more options for the conversion.Barry #11 I ran across this: sure it still applies. But could explain why you are getting 2 "preview" images. If you do much editing in Capture NX2, you will not have the ability to convert using View NX2, the option is grayed out. The two applications use similar, but unique raw converters. The amount of data that you are stripping from the file(s) (embedded EXIF data) is pretty insignificant. 2025-04-17With" Photoshop instead of saving as TIFF from NX2, does that make a difference?DG #4 The thumbnail is tiny and could be useful, I don't see why it is a problem. It's only a problem because I ended up with two JPEG's for each TIFF that I converted in GC.Plus, GC appended something like 001 and 002 to the JPEG file names to distinguish them, so it changed the name of the file that I wanted to convert e.g. instead of image.jpg I ended up with image_001.jpg.Barry #5 If you "Open With" Photoshop instead of saving as TIFF from NX2, does that make a difference?DG Never tried that. I have an old, incompatible version of PS.Barry #6 So did you try View NX2 like I suggested? It is a free download and does everything you want in one step. #7 "Open with" creates a TIFF which opens in PS unless you have preferences set to open TIFF & JPEG in ACR. That copy of TIFF is saved also.I have no idea how small you want to go, but use image size and use 100 ppi for web and 250/360 for printing depending.Do your final sharpening at final size with a small radius, .5 pixel. You should have already done capture sharpening.72 ppi for web is archaic. Monitors today are around 100.Put a ruler on a 1000 px image. If it is around 10", then you monitor is 100. Do not let some program do the sharpening for you. #8 There's no such thing as an "incompatible" version of PS for receiving TIFF files from NX2.
