Nisus Writer Pro: a Veteran Powerhouse Writing Tool

Conveniently in NWX itself, and its handling of styles, combined with the transparent use of languages, makes me use this word processor every time I need to write complex multilingual texts. I also use NWX quite a lot to clean up badly formatted text, since its find and replace feature simplifies things a lot. As you can see, the enthusiasm's there; it's only NWX's shortcomings that prevent me from using it all the time and force me to use other word processors. Nisus is definitely heading the right way, and I can't wait to see what Nisus Writer (Express) 3 will look like. irev Posts: 22 Joined: 2003-03-06 15:16:43 Post by irev » 2006-10-31 10:04:19 Like midwinter and Heather Kay I use Nisus for all text related input. Including copy for web sites, newsletters and magazine articles/editorials. The latter gets dumped directly in to Adobe Indesign. Unfortunately save to HTML doesn’t produce clean modern code and have switched to TextEdit for fast coding of lists and tables. Other than that, Nisus is my main writing tool and has been since Classic Nisus. martin Official Nisus Person Posts: 5230 Joined: 2002-07-11 17:14:10 Location: San Diego, CA Contact: Re: NWX - Invaluable Assistant Post by martin » 2006-10-31 13:17:34 Always nice to hear what our tool is being used for dshan wrote:NWX is assisting me in expanding my short story rejection letter collection.LOL midwinter Posts: 333 Joined: 2004-09-09 18:07:11 Location: Utah Contact: Re: NWX - Invaluable Assistant Post by midwinter » 2006-10-31. Desired heading (or other special content) and jump right to it.Skip the MouseOne thing I love about the new Go To Content command is that I can keep my hands on the keyboard the whole time. Using Nisus Writer’s multi-key shortcuts I’ve established a few shortcuts to trigger variants of the Go To Content command. For example: Command + GT for Go to Text in TOC, and Command + GB for Go to Bookmark.Once a “Go To” dialog is open, it’s quick to finish the job via the keyboard:1. Type a few keywords to narrow down the list of destinations.2. Press the Down Arrow key to select the desired destination.3. Press Return to jump to the destination text.Okay, so maybe it doesn’t take that long to grab your mouse and click around, but it feels really great when you get something done using only the keyboard. You stay more focussed on your writing– in the flow. If you haven’t bothered to train your habits to reduce mouse usage, I suggest you give it a try. It can be a revelation!Learn MoreFor more details on this new feature in Nisus Writer Pro, please see the Go To Content section of our user guide. It goes over some other details and tricks, like using the Go To Content dialog to produce a list of specialized search results. Of the document. Fixed: no longer beeps if trying to delete content from the end of a note and user accidentally selected the note terminator character. Fixed: zoom steps in the main menu did not match those in the tag (and the ones used when using zoom in/out commands) Fixed: macro commands Find Next/Prev would fail the very first time they were used if the find panel had never been shown. Fixed: if a cross-reference started the paragraph following a list paragraph that the reference derived its content from smart updates would continue indefinitely. Fixed: Dutch smart quotes curly properly. Opt: single table cells that are too large for a single page do not try to draw all content. Fixed: single table cells with a center vertical alignment that are too large for a single page no longer draw the middle content. Fixed: character attributes defined by a list level could bleed into bullets. Fixed: some line numbering format option changes did not take after inserting new section break. Changed: Save As PDF dialog is a proper sheet instead of a modal dialog. Fixed: pasting one line of text that ended in a newline over another would add a superfluous newline. Opt: invalidating lots of images in table cell text storages when the document closes doesn't take forever. Fixed: some cases where the selection anchor in the stylesheet navigator was not set. Fixed: possible crash when languages edited before language toolbar button found time to deallocate. Fixed: in some cases a mutable paragraph style was not set in the RTF reader's computed attributes, preventing a document from opening. Fixed: fonts in RTF files with negative indexes in the font table are not ignored (eg: could be written by Mariner Write). Fixed: sometimes the border palette would show an edge style that was not selected for modification. ©2025 Nisus Software, Inc. All rights reserved. The latest versions of Nisus Writer Pro (version 3.4) and Nisus Writer Express (version 4.4) resolve Sonoma system incompatibilities and ensure a smooth writing experience. Many issues have been fixed, including crashes that were triggered by Apple’s new predictive text typing feature.New versions are available via all channels depending on your original purchase method: • Use the menu Check for Updates inside the app • Download an update from nisus.com • Update via the Mac App Store (if you purchased from Apple) If you recently updated to macOS Sonoma you likely had trouble with Nisus Writer. The most serious issue is related to Apple’s updated system-wide predictive text typing feature, which consistently triggers crashes in Nisus Writer. There are a few other Sonoma issues that affect Nisus Writer, including problems using the print dialog. We have a pre-release beta version of Nisus Writer Pro that attempts to fix the most serious of these problems. We’re very sorry for the trouble! We hope the beta helps while we smooth out other remaining issues.UPDATE: The beta has been superseded by new app versions that officially support macOS Sonoma. We are happy to announce the release of Nisus Writer Pro version 3.3 and Nisus Writer Express version 4.3. The main points are to ensure compatibility with macOS Ventura (pending Apple’s final release) and restore the Spanish localization. There’s also the usual batch of smaller fixes and improvements. These app updates are free for existing users of current versions. The updates are available in-app using the menu Check For Updates, via the Mac App Store, or as downloads from our website. Apple recently made it possible for adventurous Mac users to install macOS Ventura ahead of the new system’s final release. A developer account is no longer required; any user can participate. You need only enroll in Apple’s beta program. We generally don’t recommend that our users try beta versions of macOS, unless you have a high threshold for potential headaches (and good data backups). However, if you are sinking your toes into Ventura’s sandy beaches, be aware that the current release versions of Nisus Writer are not compatible. Nisus Writer will likely crash when attempting to load documents on Ventura. We are working on updates to smooth over any incompatibilities that aren’t resolved by Ventura’s final release. If you need access to a version of Nisus Writer that runs on Ventura please join the Nisus beta team. We’re already privately testing to make sure we’re ready for Ventura’s release one way or another.UPDATE: Nisus Writer has been updated for macOS Ventura compatibility (pending Apple’s final release). Nisus Writer’s font menu has long been WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get, for any kids out there). But that isn’t always helpful. You don’t want to see how a list of font names will look. You actually want to see how your text will look. This is where Nisus Writer’s font preview can help. For example, let’s say that you select a text equation in your document and use the
