Chiyome is a Persona in Persona 5: The Phantom X.History[]Mochizuki Chiyome (望月 千代女*)?, also known as Mochizuki Chiyojo or Mochizuki Chiyo (望月 千代), was a sixteenth century Japanese noblewoman, poet and kunoichi living near the end of Sengoku period. Born with the bloodline of Mochizuki family, one of the leading families of Kouga-ryuu ninja clan, she was raised as a professional ninjutsu user and married to Mochizuki Moritoki, nephew of Takeda Shingen, who was a famous daimyo and the leader of Takeda clan. After Moritoki was killed in the fourth Battle of Kawanajajima, she was assigned by Shingen to establish an undergroud spy network based in Kai Province and Shinano Province serving the Takeda clan, also as a mean of revenge. Following Shingen's orders, Chiyome set up a dojo specializing in kunoichi training in Netsu Village of Chiisagata-gun (currently Chiisagata District, Nagano), gathered around 200 to 300 orphans and abandoned children, raised and trained them to master techniques such as jujutsu, prayer, ninjutsu, singing and dancing, instrument playing and information-gathering skills including sexual seduction and psychological manipulation. The trained kunoichi were then assigned by Chiyome to travel around the country as wandering mikos to do underground tasks including espionage and assassination for the benefits of Shingen and the Takeda clan. Despite the fact that there were not many records left to prove her whole life, Chiyome had become a legendary figure in the history of Japan as an outstanding strategist and the leader of one of the largest kunoichi groups.Appearances[]Persona 5: The Phantom XProfile[]Persona 5: The Phantom X[]Chiyome is Riko Tanemura's Persona. Nine syllables, also referred to as ‘’The Nine Hands Seals’’ or ‘’The Nine Cuts’’ are hand positions used in Ninjutsu as a process of ritual and meditation called Kuji Kiri. Outside of the Shinobi culture they are sometimes called “The Ninja Secret Hand Signs.” This should not be surprising given that many areas of the art of Ninjutsu are stereotyped as “secret” whether they are or not. “Kuji” is a term that is used to describe energy focusing, which is what is meant to occur when preforming kuji-in or kuji kiri. The nine hand gestures or cuts correspond with mantras that serve to evoke energy change and in some cases, inspire enlightenment.History of the Nine SyllablesSimple hand mudra used in meditation. As is the story of many martial arts origins, the nine hand seal techniques find their origin in ancient Hindu teachings. The gestures remained mostly unchanged, but mantras were added to stimulate personal growth and empowerment. The Buddhist movement spread through China and later to Japan circa 552 A.D.After Japanese translation of the mantras, Reiki, and the kuji-in became resources for those looking to grow the areas of philosophy they practiced. There are known to be 81 different ways of interlocking the fingers to create kuji. The kuji kiri are nine “cuts” or cutting motions associated with the nine syllables or kuji-in. In ancient times, these motions were said to represent a spell or curse placed upon one’s adversary. There is heavy debate over whether the practice of kuji kiri is safe, or too great a risk that the doors it opens may serve as a gateway for evil spirits. The pentagram symbol is sometimes associated with the practice, but adaptations of the kuji themselves often reference the divine spirit or explicitly God and/or Christ and the hexagram. The practice of the nine syllables is known as a part of the art of Ninjutsu, but this portion is not used by all Shinobi and not taught by all instructors.
