In this episode Trent examines the faulty claims of “prosperity preachers” like Kenneth Copeland who promise to wealth to Christians who tithe (to their ministries).Welcome to the Council of Trent Podcast, a production of Catholic Answers.Trent Horn:Hey everyone. In today’s episode, I want to help you understand a part of something that is called the prosperity gospel, or the health and wealth gospel.Trent Horn:So prosperity theology became really popular in the mid-20th century with Pentecostals. They thought that a person could know God favored him because that person received spiritual gifts, or what are called charisms.Trent Horn:Now these gifts were usually things like prophecy, speaking in tongues, but gifts of prosperity and comfort, these became really popular saying, “Oh, not just speaking in tongues, you’ll get money and health if you love God and you tithe.”Trent Horn:Kenneth Copeland, Oral Roberts, these are the guys saying this, and still saying this, with Copeland. And they said, “You need to plant seed faith. If you give a financial gift, like to your favorite televangelist, you plant a seed, it will grow. And then God will bless you with money.”Trent Horn:Robert Tilton, a televangelist called this the Law of Compensation. So it’s the idea that if you give to God, to the televangelist, God will give back to you. So giving is more like an investment. This seed faith idea, plant a seed gift.Trent Horn:And so, like I said, Robert Tilton called this the Law of Compensation. Kenneth Copeland calls it the Law of Prosperity. Prosperity preachers always use this.Trent Horn:Oral Roberts, put it this way. “Luke 6:38 says, ‘Give, and it will be given to you.’ We must first plant a seed of faith so that God can multiply it back to meet our need.”Trent Horn:So in this episode, I want to show you why this Law of Prosperity, Law of Compensation, is, it’s bunk. And it’s sad because you’d think people would just be able to see it’s ridiculous to think that God is going to automatically give us money just because we gave him, more accurately, these preachers, money. Yo no lodije. Otro miembro de la familia Hagin no lo dijo. Muchos se han dado la ideade que este mensaje de fe es el mensaje de Hagin. ¡No! Was no interpretation, Paul stated people should keep silent and pray to God inwardly. However, Paul makes a distinction between praying in tongues, which not everyone understands, and singing praise and thanksgiving in the ordinary language of the gathered believers. He instructs the Corinthians, “In church I would rather speak five understandable words to instruct others than ten thousand words in a tongue.“ The key is clarity so that the church can worship together in unity and everyone can receive teaching (1 Corinthians 14:19).Verses Confirming Silent, Private PrayerThe Bible encourages believers to pray in private as well as corporately. Here are some verses that confirm the validity and importance of silent, personal prayer:Matthew 6:6“But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.” This verse from Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount affirms praying alone in a private place where one can focus solely on God.1 Thessalonians 5:17“Pray continually.” This exhortation suggests believers cultivate an ongoing dialogue with God throughout the day. Though some prayers may be voiced aloud, much of this continual conversation occurs silently within one’s spirit.Romans 8:26“In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans.” This verse confirms that the Holy Spirit prays silently within us, often expressing the deepest groans of our hearts better than words can articulate.1 Samuel 1:12-15When Hannah was praying silently for a child, the priest Eli thought she was drunk because her lips were moving but no sound came out. This shows how normal and commonplace silent prayer was in biblical times. While vocalized prayer serves an important communal purpose, these verses make clear that silent, inner prayer is just as biblically valid. God hears the sincere petitions of our hearts whether we pray aloud or in the quietness of our spirits.Through quiet contemplation and listening, we may even discern the gentle whispers of the Holy Spirit within us.Tips for Praying Out Loud With OthersOvercoming Shyness When Praying AloudMany believers feel bashful about praying aloud in front of others, but there are some great tips to help overcome this shyness.Start by praying aloud when you’re alone to grow more comfortable with verbalizing your thoughts to God.Volunteer to pray in small group settings to practice speaking out loud before working your way up to larger crowds.Focus on God when praying aloud, rather than worrying what others may think.Ask a close friend or pastor to specifically pray for your confidence in public prayer. As we spend more time in prayer, our intimacy with God grows, and vocal prayer becomes as natural as speaking with a close friend. So be patient with yourself and remember that “God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love” (2 Timothy 1:7).Leading Out Loud Prayer in Church Meetings and Small GroupsIt’s a privilege to lead

Gifted to] translate or explain [what he says].14For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unproductive [because it does not understand what my spirit is praying].15Then what am I to do? I will pray with the [d]spirit [by the Holy Spirit that is within me] and I will pray with the mind [using words I understand]; I will sing with the spirit [by the Holy Spirit that is within me] and I will sing with the mind [using words I understand].16Otherwise if you bless [and give thanks to God] in the spirit only, how will any outsider or someone who is not gifted [in spiritual matters] say the “Amen” [of agreement] to your thanksgiving, since he does not know what you are saying?17You are giving thanks well enough [in a way that God is glorified], but the other person [who does not understand you] is not edified [and spiritually strengthened since he cannot join in your thanksgiving].18I thank God that I speak in [unknown] tongues more than all of you;19nevertheless, in public worship I would rather say five understandable words in order to instruct others, than ten thousand words in a tongue [which others cannot understand].Instruction for the Church20Brothers and sisters, do not be children [immature, childlike] in your thinking; be infants in [matters of] evil [completely innocent and inexperienced], but in your minds be mature [adults].21It is written in the Law, “BY MEN OF STRANGE TONGUES AND BY THE LIPS OF FOREIGNERS I WILL SPEAK TO THIS PEOPLE, AND NOT EVEN THEN WILL THEY LISTEN TO ME,” says the Lord.22Therefore, [unknown] tongues are [meant] for a [supernatural] sign, not to believers but to unbelievers [who might be receptive]; while prophecy [foretelling the future, speaking a new message from God to the people] is not for unbelievers but for believers.23So then, if the whole church gathers together and all of you speak in [unknown] tongues, and outsiders or those who are not gifted [in spiritual matters] or unbelievers come in, will they not say that you are out of your mind?24But if all prophesy [foretelling the future, speaking a new message from God to the people], and an unbeliever or outsider comes in, he is convicted [of his sins] by all, and he is called to account by all [because he can understand what is being said];25the secrets of his heart are laid bare. And so, falling on his face, he will worship God, declaring that God is really among you.26What then is the right course, believers? When you meet together, each one has a psalm, a teaching, a revelation (disclosure of special knowledge), a tongue, or an interpretation. Let everything be constructive and
